My one and only time to Groton Church of St Bartholomew was on 24th April 1999

Some notes gleaned of the Parish

  • The 'village' is made up of a series of Hamlets which are
  • Groton Street
  • Gosling Green
  • Horner's Green
  • Daisy Green
  • Castling's Heath
  • Parliament Heath
  • Park Corner
  • Population by Census Year
  • 1841 = 624
  • 1931 = 316
  • 1951 = 219
  • 1961 = 201
  • [1977] = 237

....and of the church

  • Most of the building is 15c but the lower parts of the tower are 13c
  • The Parish Registers date from 1562
  • A list of Rectors date from 1220 [Hugh de Groton]
  • Many memorials to the Winthrop family
  • In the Churchyard the oldest gravestone in Suffolk is dd 1598
  • Chest from 14c
  • Five Bells exist, two of which are dd 1426 & 1460
