Jacques Balmat was the first mountaineer recorded to have climbed Mont Blanc in 1786, his statue can be found in Chamonix town centre

This is one of 121 heroes in WWII that put up great resistance against the Wehrmacht http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gli%C3%A8res_Plateau the cemetery sits in a valley with the massive Glières Plateau towering above

We were able to spend 30 minutes here to reflect on this almost impregnable fortress and the bravery of those involved
