In our local woods there is one particular tree that has two branches gnawed, one branch is 5' off the ground the other is 6-7' above ground level
I have a theory that deer could rise on thee back legs and gnaw these branches but the only deer that we know of in this area are of the Muntjac variety [I have seen these and don't think they would be tall enough to take on this task even on hind legs] or could it be a squirrel, I'm pretty sure there is no bird with a bill that could do this, so does anyone have any idea what it might be.
The gnawing is mainly from above the branch, although there are signs that the undersides have been chewed too
I went back over to this tree yesterday and took photos, there are some chippings on the ground, the diameter of the branch at its narrowest is 1" there are tiny holes bored in to the branch as if a weevil [??] has burrowed in
