The Orwell Crossing or The River Orwell Bridge as it is more popularly known is a magnificent pre stressed concrete structure completed in 1982, the public was allowed to walk on the bridge on the Sunday before the official opening, I did just that as did many others.
The height above the River Orwell is 125' and has a span of 4000', it also carries two lanes of traffic in each direction on the A12/A14 Trunk Road, there are pathways ether side of the carriageway and steps lead to below bridge level
There are various views to be had
Mid River views From East or West on the A12/14 [Wherstead and Braziers Wood] From the Wherstead Flyover From Wherstead Churchyard From Freston Hard on Westbank [3 laybys] From Freston Folly From Woolverstone Marina [Harwich Yacht Club] From the open top bus journey in the summer holidays Pipers Vale Foreshore From Bourne Park From a boat or air Searsons Farm Trimley, very distant viewa The Crane Tops at Felixstowe Docks the latter of which I have not had the pleasure of doing!
There is a 28" water pipe carried from Alton reservoir through the concrete box section serving the people of Ipswich and District with its water supply
The Butt & Oyster Pub at Pin Mill [Chelmondiston] can serve drinks to small boat owners through a hatch on a high tide such as here, this is an idyllic spot but stay clear at weekends in the Summer as it can get extremely busy
