On my visit to Covehithe again last Tuesday, I was quite surprised to see this notice appear which basically bans pedestrians for accessing the beach, less than three years ago this was the cliff edge, this section of cliff has since disappeared and what is left is covered with brambles and undergrowth
This is the current view from the 'road to nowhere' looking north towards Benacre, since I was last here two years ago so much land has been washed away from either sea, wind or even rain erosion, this is most noticeable from the beach [more on this later] as where Sand Martins nested last year today there is no evidence and some of their nesting holes penetrate 3' into the cliff face. As a point of interest the Martins are back and more on this later
The top photo was taken circa year 2000, the tree in the second photo now does not exist, the photo below was taken less than three years ago, much land has since disappeared [the row of trees beyond are on land at Easton Bavents managed by English Nature]
Last week [April 2011] pretty much the same view looking south towards Southwold note the precarious cliff overhang, it is also interesting to note that on the latest photo [below] the farmer had decided to plant this years cereal crop last Autumn and where the seed has been drilled much of the cliff has disappeared
