I have seen quite a bit of erosion of the coast around Suffolk over the years. Stretches at Pakefield, Benacre Broad, Covehithe, Walberswick, Dunwich, East Lane [Bawdsey] and Felixstowe Ferry are seemingly those that have suffered most. There has also been a lot of erosion of the tidal estuaries especially saltbeds and river walls.
Conversely I have seen the shingle change course particularly at Shingle Street but this photo at Felixstowe Ferry Golf Course has reversed the process.
In 1956 the [green top lantern] beacons were in the sea and up until 4 years ago yachts and other boats were entering and leaving the River Deben by this course. Upon this silting up I have seen the odd yacht or three come to run aground.
Three years ago a lagoon started to form here, I have photographed its progress, the lagoon was quite a large mass of water but with successive tides and winter gales this lagoon is almost filled in, keep an eye on the 'lanterns'
Here is the photo from that time
July 2005
This one from October 2005
July 5th 2006 now wasn't this a waste of time bringing these rocks all the way from Norway as the shingle bank was forming!
This shot was taken May 4th 2007 with many smaller lagoons appearing
This was taken on Nov 5th 2007 with the lagoon ring fully formed, note the 'lanterns' in the distance
This photo was taken from Covehithe Cliff Edge of the nearby church, the church appears to be closer than it is to the clifftop this is purely down to the picture being taken with a telephoto lens, but one day in the next couple of decades the church and nearby farm may well succumb to the sea
This is the road which passes the church eastwards, be very careful here as this was again taken with a telephoto lens [I know my limits !] The red markings on the road have been placed there by the Environment Agency, you can rest assured another few feet of tarmac will disappear before too long
