RE: Earl Stonham

I have been to St Mary's at Earl Stonham on a few occasions, one occasion 15th February 1999 I made a few notes and have garnered a few more from the church booklet

  • This church once had a central tower
  • Clerestory and roof added in 1460
  • An exceptional roof probably unparalleled in Suffolk
  • An old chest dates from c1300
  • The Chancel benches have some unusual carvings
  • Wall Paintings including The Doom
  • A fine Jacobean Pulpit with sounding board and made for £10 !
  • Three Hourglasses exist
  • Chandelier is c1704
  • Font of 1460
  • A list of Rectors date from 1288
  • The Registers date from 1654
  •  Five Bells the oldest appears to be from 1704
