I have been to East Bergholt on many an occasion and to the Church of St Mary, I visited here on 24th January 1999 and made these notes as well as noted some of those found in the church booklets

  • The Church is L120' X W56' X H45'
  • The tower was started in 1525 and stopped in 1530 through lack of funds
  • John Constable RA completed a painting of the Priests Room above the Porch
  • The Bell Cage is separate from the tower and is unique and built in 1531
  • 5 bells the earliest c1450, these are currently the heaviest set of 5 bells being rung in England
  • John Constable's parents are both buried in the churchyard
  • Willy Lott [of Flatford] is also buried here
