Yaxley

Anyone with a connection to the village?

Yaxley Church. Above the doorway stands one of only two Sextons wheels remaining in any church in the UK, these being used to determine the fasting days of the Lady Day calendar by pulling one of six strings

I first visited St Mary's Church on 29th May 1999 some notes from myself and from the booklet on sale within the church

  • The North Porch is among the best in Suffolk with a groined ceiling
  • Six Bells, two dated from 1658
  • There is a doom painting
  • Reputedly the finest 17c pulpit in the County dd1635 in the tester canopy
  • An hour Glass exists
  • A Sexton's Wheel exists, which is the only one in the County and only two in the country
  • A brass of Andrew Feldgate from 1598 exists
  • A list of vicars exist from 1198
