I used to pass through Somersham twice a day to/fro RAF Wattisham when I was based on 29 Squadron from 1967-69, but I first visited the Church of St Mary on 10th April 1999, these are the notes I made at the time together with notes from the church leaflet

  • The Domesday Survey of 1086 records an incomplete church
  • The present church is Grade I listed
  • The Tower is 14c and contains two bells the oldest is 1626
  • Scratch sun dial on the south buttress
  • 14c timber framed Porch
  • Reredos dd 1601 in the Chancel
  • The registers date from 1675
  • The oldest tombstone is dd 1727
