Leiston

A small town on the coast which has its neighbour Sizewell Power Station, the 'A' Station has since been decommissioned but 'B' station is still active and it is thought a 3rd plant is soon to be built

I am very addicted to researching my 'Family History' ! I was absolutely thrilled when I discovered that my great-grandmother came from Leiston ! I have visited the place several times, and thanks to a book "Leiston cum Sizewell in the 1840s (a snapshot of village life in rural Suffolk)" by Suzanna G. Burnay published in 2000, which contains a lot of information about the inhabitants at that time, and also some detailed Tithe Maps, I have been able to pinpoint the place where her family's cottage stood.

The Church of St Margaret is quite obviously a Victorian rebuild of its predecessor with a cruciform section, the tower is the 15c original [partly hidden]. The Font is over 700 years of age, the vicar was telling me about the East Window with its female saints. The faces of which depict Anne Garrett herself within the different periods of her life, the window is by Kempe who designed this a year after Anne's death The Church is normally locked and I guess I was lucky as upon my visit a party of school children were waiting to attend a history class, the Vicar kindly gave me a history lesson too, with thanks smile.gif
