In the village, St Mary's Church has a very wide tower, the church itself was burnt out in 1842 when fireworks set light to the tower, the church was rebuilt thereafter. There is a 13c embroidered altar frontal cloth designed by Flemish Weavers with some additional Victorian stitching as authenticated by the British Museum and can be seen framed on the South Wall of the Nave.
Sir Robert Watson-Watt the inventor of R A D A R moved from nearby Orfordnessto Bawdsey Manor prior to WWII to further develop Radio Detection and this duly arrived in time when The Battle of Britain was being fought. 4 large transmitting aerials were erected [as well as a chain of Mome Masts from Newcastle to the South Coast of England], none of these now exist. The nearby R A D A R block is now a museum.
There is a walk along the seashore but walking on shingle can be hard going, sadly you cannot walk along the saltmarshes to Ramsholt. In this area Dolphins and Seals have been spotted, I have seen the latter but not the former.......
All these pictures were taken from around the Bawdsey Quay area, some are of the old RAF Married Quarters, the guardhouse entrance and the Transmitter Block. The views of the Saltmarshes are looking towards Ramsholt, there is no beach/footpath beyond a creek here though
