open letter from an author to the Suffolk people.

Below is an open letter to the people of East Anglia. The detail may be of interest to people in other parts of the world as well, however, I would particularly appreciate if you know any friends in East Anglia if you could copy this letter and send it on.

Thank you to my friends.

16th September 2009

Dear ---------,

Can I take the opportunity  to say thank you to the people of the locality, and also to establish some feedback for a project that lies ahead.  My book, From barren rocks ... to living stones, not only was an opportunity to put into print the experiences of a teenager in Aden during the terrorism of 1966/67, but also to acknowledge the role of the East Anglian people who played a part both before and after my time there.  (I was evacuated along with others from the experiences of the terrorism to RAF Honington, Suffolk in the summer of 1967, and left for Aden from Feltwell, Norfolk in the Spring of 1966.) The sale of the book has been used to support community projects.

Last month saw a successful Hebridean tour of book signing and speaking engagements, but since the book was published last year the story has been read by Jews living in Israel and Arabs in Egypt and the Oman. It has been bought as far afield as America and Australia, some through book shops, or on the internet, or else direct through my wife where we have supplied books postage free.

In addition, a translation into Urdu is soon to come out. Ironically, much of the negotiation for that translation lay between Valentines Day and Easter, both dates internationally being symbolic of relating to others and reconciliation. The reading of the book by such diverse cultures brings out the impact of such relating as well as a reminder of the care I have also known.

Discussions are now being carried out to consider the book being made available to those who are blind and/or are suffering from Dyslexia. It is hoped that we might find a way to ensure that costs are kept down, despite the specialist nature of this project. It would be helpful to get some feedback from the locality as to how much interest there might be should the facility be made available.

If you are aware of any who would benefit from this please comment on this post.

Once again, many thanks to all of you.

Regards,

 Jon Magee
