There must be absolutely lots of well known people that were either born, lived in or buried in Suffolk, our churches have memorails to a great many of these people, until five days ago I had not known of this person from Campsea Ashe, once a noted speaker for the House of Commons from 1905-1921
Viscount Ullswater of Campsea Ashe 1855-1949 [James William Lowther]
The following had a very notable connection with Woodbridge
Thomas Seckford, Court Lawyer to Elizabeth I, he was also a benefactor to the town who created such buildings as Seckford Hall, The Shire Hall, and Seckford Hospital and Almshouses
Isaac Johnson was a map maker of repute
Edward Fitzgerald was famous for translating the poems of Omar Khayyam
Thomas Churchyard was a local water colour artist and lawyer
The title of this thread reminds me of a humourous tale that was told of Americans visiting europe. They particularly were interested in the history of europe. They came to a village (could it have been in suffolk?) and saw some old men standing talking on a street corner and asked of them, "Was there any famous men born in this community?" The old men thought for a moment, looked at each other in puzzlement, and then replied, "No, there were never any famous MEN born here. We only have BABIES born here."
