Flushwork on most of our Church Towers is an art form of obtaining flintstone and using a bolster and chisel cutting the stone to a smooth face, this example at St Nicholas Church was completed in 1886, this is rough in comparison to some ie Southwold, Eye etc http://english-church-architecture.net/suffolk/e/elmswell/elmswell.htm
Some of these faces you can almost rub your hands across [not entirely recommended!] others you can't but just imagine a Church Tower some 60' high, a lot of time expended on these stones
