Birds

I visited Lakenheath Fen RSPB centre yesterday, for the first time.

Although the trails are not altogether easy and in wet weather must be very clay like, but I certainly wasn't disappointed

Saw several Marsh Harriers and Herons, The Hobbys were out in force too but there were two birds that I found fascinating, The Golden Oriole was singing fabulously although I never did spot any of the three males and two females in the Poplar Plantation, there are 5 birds here out of a population of 40 in the UK.

The Bittern is an exceedingly rare and secretive bird of Britain, it virtually hides itself in extensive reedbeds mainly in East Anglia, to hear one BOOM! BOOM! is rare enough, to see one is even rarer [5 times I have seen them and they breed in the marshes 20 miles from where I live at Minsmere, Lakenheath Fen and one or two other places ] there are only about 70 in the whole country.

Before 1947 Avocets were not seen in the UK until the first pair started breeding again in 1947 near Minsmere in Suffolk, today there are thousands in the country and throughout the Summer Months hundreds can be seen at Minsmere RSPB, the RSPB use this bird as their logo
