I have been through Barnham many times but have never stopped, I used the short cut from Euston to Elveden thus avoiding Thetford before relief roads were introduced, however it doesn't seem to get any better!

I know that there is a nice drive through a tall avenue of trees and passing the old RAF Married Quarters which housed personnel that were either stationed at Honington or RAF Barnham.

For those unaware RAF Barnham was a source for Britains Armed Forces to store some of its Nuclear Weaponry [so close and convenient to RAF/USAF Lakenheath too !] I was once travelling through Thetford Forest and found the way ahead blocked, a Royal Navy truck [odd wedge shape] had got a flat tyre the convoy was fully armed and I am sure US Personnel were present to.

Being a Navy truck it may well have been en route to Faslane where the Polaris Nuke Subs were based, who knows and of course the USA had joint control over our 'independent' nuclear capability. Thankfully my journey was not too long delayed but scary enough to remember the event vividly!

A link........
