The church with a Saxon or Norman round tower sits close to The River Waveney. Remotely situated down a track, it was here in the 12c that Baron Bigod was supposed to have surrendered his castles at Framlingham and Bungay
My grandfather Zachariah Evans lived here until he was married, and most of his siblings were born here between 1853 and 1870. Somehow, grandpa Zac managed to arrive over at Easton, near Framlingham. One day I may find out why ... somehow I don't have much hope!
His wife and her elder siblings were born in Hoxne, but then the family moved to Syleham, and her younger brother and sister were born here. In 1913, her brother Willie drowned in the river here. He had seen service with the Essex Regiment in both India and South Africa, and it's my suspicion that the strange behaviour that led to his death resulted from some experience he'd suffered during that time. Another mystery that may never be solved!
