Dallinghoo.

What is the connection between this small, country village and the Island of Penang, off the Northwest coast of Malaysia where I live?  Is there one, I hear you ask.  Yes, there most certainly is.

That connection is one Francis Light, the Founder of the Colony, then known as Prince of Wales Island, in 1786.  Light was born in Dalling Hoo in 1740.  He later joined the East India Company which led him to this area.

Not long after arrival, he pruchased an estate some four miles to the west of the Colony's capital, George Town,  That estate he named after his native county, Suffolk.  The house that he built on that land also carried the same name.

During the early part of the 20th century, the house was left to decay.  However, its historical significance was recognised and recemtly much work has been going on to restore it to its former glory.  The link below will give more of its history as well as some excellent photos of the house as it now is.

There is a further link on that page which will give more details of Light's life. Click on the biography link for more details.

That is interesting Laurie and good of you to join us all the way from Malaysia

The church here is the only church in Suffolk with an east facing tower, this once had a central tower but the east nave was removed later

I visited Dallinghoo St Mary's on 20th March 1999, here are some of my notes and those of the church upon my visit

  • The Tower was once in a central position and is now situated in an eastern elevation
  • A single bell is situated within the Tower
  • In 1830 Reverend Ellis Walford became the incumbent Vicar of St Mary's he was a direct descendent of Edward III
  • The Oak Pulpit of the 17c is richly carved
