RE: Cowlinge

My notes and those of the Church of St Margaret of Antioch when I first visited 24th April 1999

  • There is a 200 acre estate known as Branches Park which once housed a mansion and the grounds laid out by that great landscape designer Capability Brown
  • The village is pronounced Coolinge, I recall this unusual pronunciation when I was at RAF Stradishall and we would walk [on occasion] to the village
  • The churchyard has an unusual number of 18c gravestones with various symbols
  • The tower is modern [1733] in comparison to most Suffolk churches but similar to Grundisburgh and Drinkstone
  • Nave & Aisles date from c1330-1340
  • The clerestory is probably 14c
  • Tiebeam & Crown-post roof from the 14c
  • Much graffiti exists over the centuries on the supporting pillars
  • the font is c1400
  • Royal Arms to George II dd1731
  • 15c beautiful Parclose Screen
  • Rood Screen c1400, this screen and Lavenham are the only ones in the county to retain their original doors
  • 14c Piscina in the Sanctuary
  • Five bells, the tenor bell dates from 1734
