River Stour

The source of the River Stour rises in Cambridgeshire, less than a handful of miles from the Suffolk border, for a detailed description look here at The Great Bradley Website

http://www.great-bradley.suffolk.gov.uk/gb%20village/riverstour.htm

I have walked the length of The Stour [where it is possible to do so] from Stoke by Clare to Trimley Marshes [you come to a dead end at Felixstowe Docks Trinity Quay]

There is much controversy as to the Stour's pronunciation

Some say Stow-er [as in Shower]
Some say Sturr
Some [like me] say Stoor

Whatever way anyone pronounces it is a fantastic river to be on or walking by

More to follow

A great view of the North bank of the Stour, looking towards Suffolk can be had by visiting the Essex side of the Stour River. Take the Manningtree to Harwich road [pausing at Mistley Walls] and although the road is winding there are some great views of The Royal Hospital School at Holbrook.

Progressing even further there is an RSPB/Woodland Trust Reserve [car park sign posted TM 189309] approximately one mile from Wrabness Railway Station. This wood is called Stour Wood and gives commanding views over the Stour but with an added attraction of seeing thousands of migrating waders, ducks and geese from October through to March.

Be warned that the route to the bird hides can be exceptionally muddy after a rainy period. There is a further walk East to The Essex Wildlife Trust Reserve, this all encompasses The Essex Way long distance footpath which runs adjacent to Copperas Bay, these sites are RAMSAR and SSSI sites.

If you catch Springtime [approx March] the whole wood is carpeted with wood anemones

Back towards Wix there is also a nature reserve which was on the site of the old Royal Navy Depot with all its underground bomb bunkers now capped, the views across the river to The Hospital School are really good. White Admiral and Essex Skipper butterflies may be seen in this area.
