Great Livermere

There are two names on the War Memorial that I would like to know more about, can anyone help.......?

Extracted from Flight magazine:-

Captain CHARLES D'ARCY EDMUND WENTWORTH REEVE,

Suffolk Regiment and Royal Flying Corps (killed on July 18th

whilst flying), was younger son of Mr. C. S. Wentworth

Reeve, Thorpe Satchville, Melton Mowbray, and Livermere

Park, Bury St. Edmunds. He was 21 years of age, and after

entering the Suffolk Regiment he specialised in aviation and

obtained rapid promotion. He held the rank of Temporary

Captain whilst Fight-Commander in the R.F.C.

.......and Corporal Harry Hilder Military Medal, how did he receive this medal?

Great Livermere Hall [a former rectory] where the original Hall must have been a grand affair, see this oil painting

Looking at my notes I first visited St Peter's Church on 11th September 1999, I have since been back on several occasions, a few church notes

  •  An original church was once thought to have existed here since the 7c
  • The tower fell during a storm on a night in 1871 and has since been truncated and weather capped, the tower is thought to be originally 12c
  • The lightest peel of bells [5] in the world can be found at St Peter's Great Livermere
  • A three decker pulpit from the 18c exists
  • The last man to be hung at Bury St Edmunds has a memorial in the Nave [Arundel Coke] see entry for 1722 http://www.stedmundsbury.gov.uk/sebc/visit/1700-1899.cfm
  • In the churchyard are the graves of William Sakings Falconer to Charles I & II & James II

Harry Hilder MM was my Great Grandfather's cousin.  Unfortunately I don't have any further information on why he was awarded the MM however I can confirm that he was in the 8th Battalion East Surrey Regiment and died at Arras on 3rd May 1917.  There is a memorial to him also in the Churchyard, behind the church by the back wall, next to his sister [Constance Gobbitt] and parents Baptist and Alice Hilder.  I would be very interested if anyone locally has further information.
