Boulge Church

Boulge is a small hamlet approximately three miles from Woodbridge. There is no village as such just scattered houses and country lanes, Boulge only has a population of approximately twenty-five people, so the main focus of the area is the church of St Michaels, which is located off the Debach road.

Following the hand painted signs to the church you will find a very peaceful and pretty place.

The Fitzgerald family is the most dominant name at the church and has a family mausoleum

Edward Fitzgerald who was buried beside the family mausoleum was famous for the translation of the Rubiyat of Omar Khayyam from Persian.

The Fitzgeralds also owned the Boulge Hall in the early 19^th century.

Nice photos Julie, I believe you have some family connection with the two side by side childrens graves in one of your photos. I look forward to more of your photos around that area and the rest of Suffolk.

I have been to Boulge Church today, with only 27 people living here it is supposed to be the smallest Parish in the country, photos to follow within two weeks

Boulge Church is full of Fitzgerald Monuments, indeed there is a Mausoleum in the churchyard on the left of the photo housing the remains of the Fitzgeralds except for Edward the translator of the Poem The Rubiyat of Omar Khayyam from Persian into English who is buried in an adjacent plot. Visitors from around the globe make the pilgrimage here to this very isolated spot where finding St Michael's is an adventure in itself!
