My name is Paul Conn and I live in Milwaukie Oregon. I had the luck about 12 years ago to find a large photograph of Pin Mill from the 1860's, certainly the oldest photo of the Butt and Oyster that I have come across. It was done in the old wet collodian type glass plate and is 12 x16 inches. It had a note, "Pin Mill near Ipswich." Since there is an Ipswich Mass. here in the states that is where I wrote, the historical society there to me to write to England. The reply I recieved was from about 5 miles from my home. It turns out the lady, Gloria Trunk's brother was given an MBE for his work in the history of Ipswich. She had in fact tipped a pint or two at the Butt and Oyster and she lived here in Portland. Her brother had called about the photo and she contacted me. The Portland Art Museum whould like me to donate the photo. I am not yet sure where it will end up. I have collected images of Pin Mill and it is amazing to watch it change.
