Walking the Suffolk Coast

Where it is possible to walk the 43 miles of Suffolk Coast from Landguard Point, Felixstowe to Corton I will show the whole coast in pictures and tell you the best vantage points.

The River Estuaries of the Stour, Orwell, Deben, Alde, Ore and Blyth will not be shown as these are covered under this section

One section I haven't done is the normally 'out of bounds' stretch from Slaughden Martello Tower to the Nuclear Trigger Testing Pagodas at Orfordness although I can show photos of the whole stretch of this peninsular from North and South

The photos you see will always be shown as if you were travelling from South [Landguard] to Corton and in the order you would come across them unless otherwise stated

The content on these pages appended by my name are the copyright of John Cooper

Landguard Felixstowe

There is so much to see here that more than a day is required I visit this shingle spit frequently, there is probably as much to keep me occupied here in a day than anywhere else in Suffolk, I really do love itsmile

1. The John Bradfield viewing area overlooking the Stour Estuary gives a panoramic view from Walton on the Naze pier to Shotley Point which covers Dovercourt and parts of Harwich, currently car parking is free. Within a few short years a visitors centre and larger car park is to be provided by the Port of Felixstowe once the South Configuration to Landguard Terminal has been completed. Views of the Port complex and shipping are excellent here at Britains Largest Container Port, I am reliably informed that the most number of visitors coming to Suffolk to see an attraction is at this point.

2. Felixstowe Museum is the next port of call adjacent to the viewing area car park situated in the Ravelin Block of Landguard Fort, it is an excellent museum and very affordable http://www.freewebs.com/myfelixstowe/

3. Landguard Fort, a splendid tour and views from the Fort roof are superb http://www.landguard.com/

4. Landguard Bird Observatory affords the enthusiast some splendid views and the opportunity to see bird ringing and to see some migratory birds some of which are quite scarce http://www.lbo.org.uk/

5. Landguard Nature Reserve is a nationally important bird and plant reserve, please tread carefully around here as there are nesting birds on the beach in the summer months and some quite rare plants  http://www.suffolkcoastal.gov.uk/yourfreetime/countryside/reserves/default.htm

Landguard Felixstowe [continued]

Landguard Point is the most Southerly point of Suffolk, it is at this point that all sorts of shipping can be seen entering and leaving the Stour Estuary from the largest container ships in the world to cruise liners, pilot boats, Coastguard cutters and pleasure craft of all sizes

Looking North from one of the many bunds known locally as the Icky Ridge the Point furthest away is at Felixstowe and is known as Cobbolds Point

There is nothing further south on the Suffolk coast than this jetty at Languard Point Felixstowe

At any point along the Felixstowe [Colneis] Peninsular if looking out to sea on a clear day you can see Roughs Towers, a WWII Gun Platform that protected the shipping lanes approach to Harwich and London. The platform has a colourful history and today is more known controversially known as The Principality of Sealand
