Abbeygate at Bury St Edmunds was once part of the second largest Abbey in the UK, you can imagine the splendour of this once Benedictine Monastery. The Gate House is not the original this was destroyed by the Townsfolk in 1327 and the one pictured here was built some 100+ years later in the mid - 15c. It was of course here that the details of the Magna Carta were drawn up at the High Altar, imagine this gateway in its full colourful glory, there are 20 niches for coloured idols/images to have been placed. The name of course implies that the Boy King St. Edmund was buried within the grounds after he was slain at the village of Hoxne Within the walls of the Abbey lies the most beautiful gardens imagineable as laid out by the Monks all those hundreds of years ago, sadly the area will be closed off as the Queen will be distributing the Maundy Money on Thursday at the Cathedral next door
