River Alde

The source is close to the village of Laxfield and is freshwater until it reaches Snape Maltings, it then flows into the salt water marshes of the Alde Estuary, hundreds of years ago the mouth was near the village of Slaughden [ceased to exist as a community in the early 20c] but over the centuries a shingle spit has formed and has pushed south by ten miles, discharging into the North Sea East of Orford.

There is a peculiarity here as by Orford the Alde merges with the Tidal River Ore, I wonder who thought up the dividing line for that one!hmm

This is the Church of St Botolph taken near to The Iken Cliffs Car Park, there is a walk from Snape Maltings to the church but watch the tides, I have found the stretch from where I took this photo to the church increasingly muddy over the years, if you are wearing Wellington Boots then you should have no problem. The church only has the nearby Hall to keep it company and the views are great with hundreds if not thousands of waders and gulls inbetween tides from October-March, this is very much Avocet and Egret Country too

Snape Maltings on the left of the picture, well in the background is the bridge just yards beyond the bridge the fresh water Alde discharges over the sluice into the estaural waters of the Alde Avocets can often be seen in this area when the tides are right
