I have been to and through Theberton many times and also have visited this lovely Church of St Peter, one such visit on the 27th February 1999 I made these notes together with the notes from the church booklet

  • A list of Rectors commences with Richard de Dodyngtone 1305
  • A Church is mentioned in the Domesday Survey of 1086
  • In 1300 the Chancel was extended eastwards
  • The round tower is dated previous to above with an octagonal top
  • There is a thatched roof
  • Scratch Dial on a buttress
  • The porch was erected c1470
  • Within the porch is the story and history of Airship Zeppelin L48 which was shot down nearby in WWI
  • The South Door is over 500 years of age
  • 15c Font
  • 13c Coffin Lid & Ledger Slabs in the Chancel
  • Monument to Victoria Cross holder Lt Col Doughty-Wylie
  • Six bells in the tower, the oldest is dd 1590
  • The Registers date from 1548
  • 12c Norman zig-zag doorway
  • Thebarton in South Australia is named after Theberton, Suffolk after its founder Col. William Light who fought with Wellington in the Peninsular War
