Debenham

A lovely village nearly town size I guess, some fine timbered houses, and of course the church which was very important in medieval times. The source to The River Deben starts just north of Deben-ham and as the name suggests there is a ford running through. I also understand that the large Department Store of Debenhams has an association here

Just looking at my notes from my last visit to Debenham a few years ago. from the source of The River Deben nearby it meanders some 32 miles discharging its fresh water just south of Ufford at the weir and ceases to be the Deben until it reaches The Bar at Bawdsey/Felixstowe Ferry and beyond that is The North Sea

Debenham lies two miles north of the A1120 road, many historical buildings adorn the High Street. Ancient Kings of East Anglia would meet in Debenham on occasions due to its central location

The Mickfield Road separates an old brick nogged inn from the school [dd 1660]. The Church of St Maryhas a Galilee Porch [only a handful exist in Suffolk]. The tower has its lower part of Saxon origin whilst the upper parts are Norman, there is an excellent tomb on the south side of the Chancel to Sir Charles Framlingham c1595, there are 8 by 2 lerestory windows giving an airy atmosphere.

There is a nice circular walk from the south walking the length of the High Street turning right at the bridge along the raised path which adjoins the ford and right again to the carpark

I must get out here again one day soon.........
