I have visited St Mary's Church on many occasions this must surely be placed in the Top Twenty of all the medieval Suffolk churches, on a personal basis I would say St Mary's is the most attractive looking church in the county if not the country. It has often been featured on Christmas Cards and Calendars

  • The spire sets this church apart from all other Suffolk churches with its flying buttresses
  • A magnificent angel roof [200 of them] reputedly one of the best in the country
  • There are only 31 recorded roofs like this in the entire world, with 21 in Suffolk!
  • Beautifully carved pews/bench ends
  • Reputedly a famous healing well existed
  • The Priests Door dd1200 is the oldest part of the church
  • South Aisle 14c
  • South Porch from 1439
  • Nave and North Aisle 15c
  • The clerestory windows contain the original glass
  • Lectern from 1520
  • Part of a Saxon Cross can be seen in the South Aisle
  • A false hammerbeam roof of this type is one of only eight in existence, all in Suffolk between Sudbury and Bury st Edmunds!
  • The pews [all but two] are dated c1480 with animals carved thereon
